Khichdi is a staple in Gujarati households and many families have this comfort food almost daily at dinner time, so, it is no surprise that a restaurant predominantly serving this dish in literally dozens of varieties from across the country has come up here in Ahmedabad. Urban Khichdi has opened up on the first floor of Shivalik Plaza on IIM Road and in keeping with its name Urban, it has modern décor. The walls here are painted yellow with beautiful tribal paintings on it. The tables are wooden and it has colourful designer tiles as table tops which is beautiful. The menu has khichdis from all over India. Also, it has many rice-based dishes from various foreign countries which are their versions of the khichdi though, of course, they have their own names for it like 'Koshari', the national dish of Egypt which has rice, lentils, vegetables and macaroni in it. The menu has 'Swaminarayan Khichdi' which is very popular in Gujarat to the North Indian style 'Dum Pukht Khichdi' and from 'Thayir Sadam' from South India to 'Kolhapuri Khada Masala Khichdi'. There is also 'Palak Paneer Khichdi' and 'Cheese Masala Khichdi' for those who love cheese in their dishes. My recommendations are: Try the 'Panchkuti Khichdi', which has 5 different kinds of lentils in it, the 'Hare Pyaz Ki Lesooni Khichdi' if you are a garlic lover and the 'Malabari Khichdi' which has coconut in it.
