Located just off the Sindhu Bhavan Road, one of the fastest growing business areas, Varanasi restaurant, contrary to the perception its name gives, is a very good non-vegetarian restaurant. It serves well-made Bengali dishes and also great biryanis and kebabs. It has got an unusual interior with a square block cut out of the centre of the restaurant which is actually the kitchen on the other side. This gives the restaurant an odd shape. The designer lighting adds to the ambience, especially at night. The chairs though are a bit uncomfortable but the food is good. Start at the beginning with a soup - 'Murgh Badami Shorba'. The menu has listed 'Jhal Muri' as a starter, 'Puff Rice' with condiments and mustard oil, which is a popular snack in the Eastern part of India. Also, another Eastern snack - 'Ghugni Chaat' is also part of the vegetarian starter list. Non-vegetarian starter - 'Gilawat' is a must-try as is also 'Karwari Jhinga', a Maharashtrian dish. Another Bengali dish is also on the main course - 'Aloo Bhaja' and 'Cholar Dal'. In the non-vegetarian section of the main course, the 'Koscha Mangsho', a Bengali mutton dish is a must try. The meat just melts in your mouth and the spices are just right in this dish. Also, the 'Goan Fish Curry' is good and it is liked by most. Try it. There is also 'Chicken Chettinad', a South Indian preparation which is definitely worth having.
