Chandigarh has an enviable green cover. So any restaurant that offers uninterrupted views of the landscape definitely earns itself brownie points. In this case, Baluchi, housed in The Lalit, impresses us with not just the view, but also its earthy interiors and overall ambience. A majority of restaurants in the city tend to play it safe with a menu that offers just north-Indian fare; think 'Dal Makhani', 'Butter Chicken' and the likes. That is not the case with Baluchi which makes room for specialities from other Indian states in its plump menu. Apart from a robust selection of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian kebabs and some quintessential Punjabi curries, you will find specials from Kashmir, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Kerala, Goa and West Bengal in the main course as well. The 'Mutton Chapli Kebab' is the perfect start and lives up to its melt-in-the-mouth reputation and distinct flavour. Vegetarians will relish 'Tandoori Malai Broccoli', a new addition here. The use of zatar spice definitely elevates this otherwise insipid vegetable. The restaurant also houses a unique ‘Naanery’ – they also call it a bread bar here - that dishes out ‘speciality’ naans as well as assorted breads paired with wine. The sweet 'Bakarkhani Naan' had us reaching for seconds. As did the 'Rajasthani Laal Maas’. The range of desserts is equally well-curated even if it’s a tad limited. The ‘Paan Kulfi’ is a good way to end your meal, even though the verdant views make sure you stay on for an after-meal coffee.
