If you are expecting plates of edible fear inspired by Heston Blumenthal’s Gothic Horror Feasts, with thrills like ‘dracula’s blood risotto’ (as seen on TV) , or maybe ‘bhoot ki biryani’ (#hauntedpj) then you should stay at home and watch the episode again. Haunted sticks to a formulaic storyline of invective multi cuisine food playing second fiddle to the restaurant theme (insert pop horror here). The props are thoughtfully attached to motion sensors and run on hydraulics to seem genuinely capricious, at least initially. Mathilda's severed head and howls from under your table that just gets irritating after a while, popping up every time the waiter leans in to serve. The tedium of scares gets particularly annoying as you chew through dried out kababs and unseasoned stir-fries.
After a while staid and conventional fine dining get a little monotonous so we are constantly on the lookout for something interesting. For the past few years dining scene in Chennai has become innovative and experimental, paving way for eccentric restauranteurs who try to reflect their quirky vision through their establishments. Their idea is to shock and conquer, at least it is with ‘Haunted’, a horror-themed restaurant intent on stepping away from conventions and trying something new. The restaurant is located in Anna Nagar East in a small villa-like façade, complete with a small backyard. If you don’t mind getting scared out of your wits then Haunted should be your next stop. A lot of planning has gone through their décor as well as their food. It won’t be wrong to say that Haunted is one of its kind restaurant in Chennai.
Haunted practices a multi-cuisine menu that tackles North Indian, Chinese and Arabian cuisines beautifully. The place is quite economical especially if you opt for their lunch buffet. Kids are welcome too, if you don’t mind having to pacify a spooked kid now and then. The food menu is quite extensive, crammed with loads of delectable choices. Dig into the first course with, corn seek kabab, momos in Halloween style, reshmi kabab, prawn 666, drums of hell, afghani BBQ chicken, murg motiya tikka, banzara fish, nandu puttu, shredded lamb in black pepper, samak meshwi, pinca dejaj, aloo anar kali and mutton uppu kari. Tuck into the second course with, dil bahar kofta Bukhara, stir fried vegetable, prawn pepper masala, shanghai chicken, dum biryani mutton, nasi goreng, oyster lamb, chicken dhaniya adraki and rara gosht.
Wash it all down with a mocktail or fresh juice. For something sweet dig into their scrumptious desserts such as, elaneer payasam, gulab jamun, Iranian falooda, sizzling hot brownie, hot fudge sundae and mini jelly falooda. What sets Haunted apart is its horror based theme and it’s well thought out décor that includes a multitude of scary props. The props are attached to motion sensors, popping up every time you move scaring the wits out of you. Walls are painted in deep grey colour to give the impression of darkness. With the help of bloody masks, tweaked photo frames, severed limbs and collage of haunted houses, the restaurant tries to convey the theme. Haunted is your answer if you want something different and unique.
