Now that manga-plastered and edgy Pan Asian restaurants are all the rage, Hip Asia can feel a bit prosaic. It plays it safe, with wonted hotel-décor and a classic menu featuring Malay, Thai, Vietnamese and (now ubiquitous in Chennai) Japanese cuisine. No quirks or hyper-authenticity here. Lamentably, Hip Asia does not seem to borrow much from the Taj’s celebrated Blue Ginger, Vietnamese being its weakest spot. It is still a solid option though, with Taj-quality service, satisfying food and pocket-friendly prices. Recommended are the Malay/Thai crispy soft-shell crabs, teppanyaki and the Malay sambal-ikan.
