When touring around South India, one of our favorite things to do is wake up to an amazing authentic South Indian breakfast. We find tucking into pillowy idlis dipped in fresh coconut chutney and polishing off a nutritious veggie upma very satisfying. We usually cap it up with a small glass of filter coffee or as the locals call it, kappi. Chennai gives you plenty of regional breakfast variety. The city is crammed to the hilt with small low-key eateries famous for serving exceptional regional food, starting early in the morning. Our preferred regional option is ‘Thirukkural Unavagam’, a quaint homely eatery tucked in the very heart of Chennai. Out of two outlets of Thirukkural Unavagam, our bets lies with the one located at II Main Road, Gandhi Nagar, Adyar, Chennai.

Thirukkural Unavagam is a complete South Indian food galore. Like many South Indian food joints, the restaurant serves purely vegetarian meal but what sets it apart is their focus on giving you a proper healthy meal farm to table. Their abundant use of nutritious ingredients, millet, ragi, beetroot, samai, separates the menu from it’s peers. Ask for their delicious organic smoothies or flavoured buttermilk to wash down the meal. Begin wading through the menu with appetizers like, kambu vadai, millet idli, masala sundal, kelvaragu kali, kaaramani vadai, saamai adai, herbal idli, ulundhu kali and traditional rice aval salad. Once you have whetted your appetite with these mouth-watering starters better foray ahead with an assortment of mains. Must haves are, vaazhaipoo dosa, bamboo rice special dosa, herbal dosa, millet dosa and sukku milagu dosa.

Opt for a meal combo for a slightly more fulfilling affair. Have a koozh’ant alongside, which is a traditional drink made of ragi/bajra and buttermilk. Munch down a sweet dry fruit laddu or multi-grain laddu to round off this comforting meal. Thirukkural Unavagam is one of the pocket-friendly eateries. We encourage you to indulge freely. Furnished completely with pale wicker furniture and matted blinds, this eatery is designed to relax and chill out.
