About Bernardo's, DLF Phase 4, Gurgaon

Whoever has said that to enjoy Goan food one has to go to Goa, clearly hasn’t been to ‘Bernardo’s’. The restaurant is very popular in Delhi NCR for serving traditional Goan food in a charming and relaxing surroundings. You will find the place to be everything associated with authentic Goan food and so much more. The restaurant initially opened its doors at Mehar Chand Market but later moved on to C.R Park to Super Mart-1 at Sushant Lok, Gurgaon. One thing that has remained the same even after so many change of addresses is their sensational food. The current outlet may be an improvement on décor and spaciousness but their food is their backbone. Locals enjoy the exoticness of Goa right here in the heart of Gurgaon. Bernardo’s is the closest you can get to Goa in a bustling city like Gurgaon.

Bernardo’s menu caters exclusively to authentic Goan food, leaning heavily towards the non-veg items so if you are a vegetarian, be prepared to a somewhat limited menu. The menu opens with, green recheio cottage cheese picattas, mutton croquettes, recheado verde, mushroom recheado, prawn sukhem, galinha cafreal, pao com chourico and traditional recheado. Pair the spicy Goan curries with some traditional Goan accompaniments like sannas, pao, arroz de chourico, Goan unpolished red rice, prawn balchao and arroz de coco. Give your palate a flavourful boost with curries on offer, mushroom xacuti, chourico sausage &potato curry, mutton vindalho, chicken roulade, traditional Goan curry, samarachi kodi, ambotik, pork cutlets, sorpotel, chicken baffad, Goan brinjal masala, temperade and caldeen.

Give the curries a stiff competition with Bernardo’s scrumptious desserts. Feast on Portuguese ‘sawdust’ pudding, caramel custard, banana toffee and the famous Bebinca with ice cream. Designed in a traditional Goan way, Bernardo’s is set up in a sunlit veranda wrapped around a homely looking dining room. Wherever you may choose to sit, inside or out, the experience will be comfortable and relaxing. A lot of attention has gone into creating this wonderfully quaint space with brightly painted walls setting off Mediterranean blue doors. Cheerful patterned table clothes cover sturdy wooden tables laid around the room at various levels. The room is adorned by old family photographs and a dusty gramophone re-emphasizing the theme. Although a little expensive, Bernardo’s is a culinary revelation waiting to be explored.

Insider Tips
My list of favourites: mackerel recheado and pao com chourico for starters, followed by the hot and sour fish ambotik (with sannas), prawn caril (with Goan red rice), and pork sorpotel
  • I wouldn't recommend Bernardo's to vegetarians, unless you'll be content with their okra temperade (coconut milk-based mild yellow curry) and Goan brinjal masala
  • If the sorpotel at Bernardo's is the show-stopper, the luscious chourico (sausages), which the Fernandeses personally make at home, and the delicate bebinca are close seconds
