Nagai is the second location for Chef Reina Nagai, first being Ibiza. The restaurant is airy and smartly adorned with tableware on display throughout, while hand-painted murals from Japanese culture are a focal point. The menu offers a lavishness of profligate Japanese tapas-style creations to begin with. I really enjoy their Aubergine Roll, a small plate of this humble vegetable dressed in a Wasabi Honey sauce and stuffed with mushrooms, spring onions and tofu packs an umami crunch. Sushi is not really the focus here, but these are lovely little creations and I especially urge you to try the classic California and the Spicy Tuna. If you turn into a regular patron, I suspect the go-to at Nagai will be the Japanese stewed pork belly Nagai style that comes perfectly slow cooked with Daikon and drizzled in a cinnamon and ginger sauce. For dessert, I would recommend the Match Green Tea Tiramisu with meringue and Amaretto bits. True to Japanese style, the pastry is not overly sweet and proves the perfect way to cap off this meal. Although I did not try it this time, Nagai also offers a fairly extensive sake list and an incredibly tempting Omakase menu. I vow to return for both.
