Some non-vegetarian pickles to look out for in Mumbai

What are your favourite pickles?

Mango? Lime? Cauliflower? Chillies?

Well if you look around in Mumbai then you will find an interesting variety of non-vegetarian pickles too.

Mumbai’s Parsi community cannot get enough of their Tarapore Patio. This is a sweet and tangy Bombay Duck (which is a fish and not a duck) pickle. The name is based on the city in Gujarat where it is said to have originated. The pickle is best combined with dhun dar or steamed rice with a bland yellow dal. One place where you can expect to buy this from is the house of caterer Zinobia Schroff in Dadar’s Parsi colony who is famous for her home-made Parsi pickles. She also makes pickles with prawns and fish roe. Her number is 9869914472.

If you have been following the food scene in Mumbai then chances are that you would have come across Gitika Saikia and her Assamese and North-Eastern pop up events. She is also known for her pork pickle which has a hint of the fiery bhoot jolakia (ghost chilli). You can order these off the Yum Made site.

William and Manini have entered the non-vegetarian pickle market in Mumbai with their brand The Pickled Chick. They offer a range of chicken pickles which comes in four flavours so far – Andhra, Keralite, Goan, and Punjabi. These can be ordered from The Pickled Chick Facebook page or by calling 7506892431.

Once the monsoons are over you can expect to find Soumitra Velkar’s Pathare Prabhu originated prawn pickles too.

So you can definitely look beyond mango next time you want to add some pickle to your meal.
