4 Luxurious Sunday Brunch Spots in Chennai

13 Oct, 2016 by Amit Patnaik

The word ‘brunch’ is said to have been coined by Englishman Guy Beringer in 1895 when he wrote an essay titled “Brunch: a Plea” in the (now defunct) Hunters Weekly. Bernier extolled the Brunch, writing “It is talk-compelling. It puts you in a good temper, it makes you satisfied with yourself and your fellow beings, it sweeps away the worries and the cobwebs of the week.”

More than a century later, while Bernier’s words might seem familiar on Hotel PR brief, we can perhaps agree that an unhurried, lavish Sunday brunch is a precious last dreg of an ever-ephemeral libation of the modern weekend. Having said that though, all brunches are not created equal. Posh hotels seem to offer the best bang for buck – offering high-quality meat and produce, along with expensive alcohol roughly for a price that will buy you a bottle of Prosecco in Chennai. I regularly indulge and have rounded up four notable mentions for you to try out.

Spectra at The Leela Palace, MRC Nagar

My numero uno recommendation for two specific charms – 1. A panoramic view of the Bay of Bengal over the Adayar estuary and 2. Spectra’ terrific multicuisine spread. Spectra takes their multicuisine a bit seriously (its name derives from the word spectrum after all), with dedicated chefs dishing remarkably authentic dishes (stellar dim sums and Thai food) at their respective stations. Reserve ahead to get a window table.

Pan Asian at ITC Grand Chola, Guindy

Perhaps the most vaunted Sunday brunch in the city since the past few years; a sit-down, multi-course affair at the much feted Pan Asian spanning Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Korean and Vietnamese cuisines is a deal that is hard to ignore. Chef Ashish Singh and his team pride themselves in a warm dining experience and are generally happy to tweak the meal as per your taste.

Focaccia at Hyatt regency

Few can nitpick through endless glasses of wine and antipasti at a brunch, and perhaps that is one of the reasons that Focaccia is abuzz with Sunday revelry, week after week. Park yourself at the sunny trattoria-style eatery and let the Italian feast flow.

The Square at Novotel

Your Sunday Saviour on the OMR; The Square’s lavish spread offers great value for money, and their energetic F&B team keep coming up with ideas to regale diners with some frolic, like opening up the pool for a dip and game-stations to entertain your kids.
