5 Bengaluru Restaurants That Have Some Smashing Small Plates

04 Oct, 2017 by Ruth DSouza Prabhu

Have you ever ventured into a restaurant alone, or with just one other dining partner and wished that you could try more of what’s on the menu? Often, starters and even main courses tend to have large portions, not giving you much scope to try out something more, even if your stomach is crying out for it That is changing now, with some restaurants offering you a range of small plates, which serve as appetizers as well as main courses at time, in single portions. This allows to you to experiment more and enjoy your eating out experience much better. Here are some of them.

Monkey Bar

This is a place which won hearts as soon as it opened its green doors and has a loyal following till this day. And that too for good reasons! For me, those reasons are the Crab Rangoon - crabmeat and cream cheese wontons for starters. Among the other small plates that are favourites here, are the Tiger Beef, the Mobar Caramelized Ribs and Monkey’s version of the cheesy fries, mainly because I can top that up with some bacon. The Med platter too is something nice, especially if you want to keep it light while pairing something substantial with your drink. Dining solo or with friends has never been this much of fun when eating out.

Sly Granny

The great thing about Sly Granny is that you just cannot get bored here. Not with the food and definitely not with all the hidden passageways and the décor, each of which has a story to tell. So spend a while here, and the small plates will help you get through a significant number of hours. Start with the Grilled Figs and Goat Cheese, which comes with crushed black pepper and light drizzle of pomegranate balsamic. Sets the right tone to move forward. The Pulled Pork Tacos can be next and with their coffee BBQ sauce, this is not one to be missed. The four versions of mini kulchas here – Pumpkin & Feta, Cheese and Feta, Kerala Beef and Chorizo kulchas are great to nibble on with a concoction from the bar. And if after all of this, you still have the space, the array of mains are quite expensive.

Polo Club, The Oberoi

The Polo Club has undergone several avatars in terms of its menu, along the way. Each time, it has come up with a winner. This latest round of changes has brought in more small plates, considering the kind of diner that visits. If salads are the way you want to go, opt for Tomato and Whipped Feta, Iceberg Wedges with hearts of palm, barley and moong, with a buttermilk dressing or the Greens and Grains with broccoli and organic mesclun. The Chorizo Fritters are a brilliant flash of hot and sour fried goodness. Pair any of these with some of the barrel aged cocktails here and you are going to have some happy food memories.

Bombay Brasserie

The food at Bombay Brasserie comprises a brilliant array of choices. And those blue and white interiors only beckon you to sit for a long and leisurely meal. Now if you are to do that, you need to be able to have the space to try as many dishes as you can. And so from the small plates here you start off with the Gunpowder Potatoes – very southern India touch with the masala podi part. With Mini Kulchas being the rage, the Chilli Cheese Kulcha is worth trying. And if you want to spice things up a bit, the Naga Ghost Pepper Wings are a must as is the Marathi Jhinga Mirch with Thecha. Pair this with some of the Pauwas and you are set.

Toast & Tonic

Toast & Tonic is an East Village Style pub and does some interesting things with local ingredients, albeit with an international touch. If you are browsing through the small plates, the Carne Asada Tostada is a good start – Chittor Agave Marinated Beef with local coriander, jalapeno and scallions makes this a delicious dish. The Smoked Cochin Mackerel on Toast is brilliant too. If you are looking for a light lunch or a heavy appetizer then the Chilli Tossed Tuna Poke Bowl – the Gobhindobhog Rice is what makes this an absolute treat. And of course, the Soft Eggs and Andouille Sausage on Sourdough Toast, with a touch of Gin Mustard Hollandaise is definitely a must-have.
