5 Best Dishes To Eat During Ramzan In Mumbai

The cuisine available during the month of Ramzan is legendary. Different cities have their own food hubs that come alive at night and Mumbai is no different. 'Mohammed Ali Road', 'Bhindi Bazar', 'Bohri Mohalla' are all different areas where folks congregate through the month post-sunset to feast. There are many options available and if you do not know better, can get quite intimidating. We decided to make it slightly easier for you and picked some of the best dishes to eat during the month of Ramzan in Mumbai. 


Haleem

This mixture of meat, wheat and lentils cooked for hours is a labour of love that is famous in Hyderabad. It is a delicacy only found during the month of Ramzan and is considered the highlight of all the food available at the time. Mumbai can not boast of Haleem stalls at every corner but when you find a restaurant that serves it, be sure to indulge! Chinese N Grill is an unusual name for a restaurant that is bursting with people during Ramzan but that is because everyone visits for their Haleem and other Ramzan treats and not their regular Chinese fare.


Nalli Nihari

This meaty dish is possibly the most popular dish in Mughlai cuisine after Biryani. It consists of lamb that is slowly cooked in simmering spices for nearly 8 to 9 hours to give you a flavourful gravy and the most tender meat. That rich gravy is usually moped up with a side order of thick naan or roti and during Ramzan city folk flock to Noor Mohammadi to eat this dish.


Paya Soup

For more people meat is restricted to the standard cuts of chicken and mutton but for those who are on a quest for deliciousness then Paya is a must. Prepared mostly in a thin soupy gravy this flavourful broth with chunks of paya ( trotters ) is ideally a breakfast dish but relished with much vigour at any meal. A trip to Mohammed Ali Road's famous Shalimar Hotel for their Paya is highly recommended.


Tikka and Kebabs

If you enjoy kebabs and smaller tikkas then there is no greater time to indulge than during Ramzan. Most dishes tend to be heavy and gravy ladened, but for more manageable finger food, it is best to gorge on that flavourful Sheekh, Shammi, Galouti Kebabs and Afghani Chicken Tikkas. You can choose from your choice of meat and there is much variety. They are found at any restaurant or most roadside vendors but our pick goes to Bademiya, both the restaurant and the street corner that they have usurped over the years. It is really what they do best.


Phirni

All that heavy food demands a sweet treat to end your experience. Lots to choose from when it comes to dessert. Malpuas and Faloodas are both top contenders but it is the rice pudding flavoured with saffron or various seasonal fruit that is the true winner. Nearly every restaurant or street stall will have some version of sweets but the king of them all is Suleman Usman Mithaiwala. He is so popular that is often frequented by local celebrities and is a dessert lover most crucial pit stop.


Sadly this season is dedicated to devout meat lovers and vegetarians tend to get overwhelmed.
