The rains are back! While cynics might despair in the aftermath of the 2015 floods, let us enjoy this brief respite from the Chennai summer with a mug in hand. A steaming hot cuppa whilst watching raindrops smatter outside is my idea of a perfect afternoon. Here are five cafés to enjoy the rains in Chennai:
The Brew Room, Savera Hotel
This is favorite café in the city. If you are coffee aficionado, this is a no-brainer. The menu and range of coffees are carefully crafted by Auroville-based roaster Marc Tormo, who has brought specialty Indian coffee beans and gear to the city. Enjoy your Monsooned Malabar with the stunning Vaccum Siphon amidst their fairytale garden.
Sandys Chocolate Laboratory, Nungambakkam
A rush of indulgent theo bromine during the rainy season is hard to refuse, chocoholic or not. Sandys takes its chocolate very seriously – choose from a range of dark, semi-dark and spice hot chocolate and perch yourself next to their large windows.
The Verandah, Taj Connemara
Indulge yourself in some old world luxury at the venerable Connemara Verandah. Let the liveried wait staff lay out high tea (you can choose from a great selection) for you, to savour the splash of Madras raindrops on the pool and gardens, much like the British gentry did, a century ago.
Colony, Raintree, Alwarpet
This rainforest-themed restaurant comes alive during these days, with the lush greenery of St Marys Road casting a mellow aura at the Colony. Sit by the expansive windows and order a cup of coffee or tea with their excellent cherry walnut crumble.
Lobby Lounge, The Leela Palace, MRC Nagar
Imagine watching the curtain of rains drape the Bay of Bengal, as it kisses the Adayar River. The mesmerising sight is yours to savour, over a hot beverage and some of the best croissants and bakes in the city at the sea-facing Lobby Lounge of the Leela Palace.
