5 Must-have dishes in Mumbai during Shravan

18 Aug, 2019 by Mini Ribeiro

The fifth month of the year as per the Hindu calendar, this holy month of Shravan is a time when people turn vegetarian, fast on Mondays and often give up their favourite dishes to detoxify. Yet, one needs to consume a balanced diet in order to remain healthy and fit. Lighter, less oily and spicy food, is generally eaten, but one need not compromise on taste and flavours. Although those observing Shravan, generally eat at home, today, restaurants in Mumbai, offer Shravan delicacies too, to wow the palate of diners. From Farali Pattice to Vrat Ke Allo and Rajira Puri to Sago Khichdi and Samak Ke Chawal, you can get them all. Here are 5 dishes worth trying in Mumbai this Shravan.

Kuttu Ki Puri at Hornby's Pavilion, ITC Grand Central, Mumbai

Relish some authentic and scrumptious vegetarian treats in this holy month of Shravan at Hornby’s Pavilion. A special Shravan counter offers Kuttu Ki Puri (Buckwheat flour disk spiked with cumin and deep-fried). If more variety is what you seek, opt for, Vrat Wale Dahi Aloo, Sabudana Khichadi, Shama Ke Chawal and Lal Bhopla Kheer (Pumpkin pudding cooked in milk with nuts).

Farali pattice at JW Cafe, JW Marriott Mumbai Sahar, Mumbai

Fasting becomes feasting at JW Café with the vast variety for Shravan as part of the regular buffet. The Farali Pattice, is a savoury treat you cannot miss here. Other dishes on offer are Farali Burger, Farali Pizza, Samo Rice Upma, Sitaphal Milkshake with Saffron Ice Cream, Kesar Aam Panna, Coconut Banana and Dry Fruit Shake, and so on.

Sabudna Khichdi at Aaswad, Dadar Shivaji Park, South Mumbai

You can not go through Shravan without sampling this popular dish. The Sabudana Khichdi here, however, is exceptional and is something one willingly devours, during a fast as well. This medley of spices with myriad ingredients and textures, is extremely well-balanced in terms of flavours.

Kelyaachi Koshimbir at Metkut, Thane

This raw banana, crunchy salad which is well-spiced, perks up your taste buds this season as you fast. Deeply satisfying, it does not make you crave for your usual oily and heavy snacks.

Nachani Pudding at Twenty Nine, Kemps Corner, Mumbai

This nutrient-packed Nachani Pudding is a delicious dessert that can be relished any time, but more so during Shravan, as it is made of ragi or nachani. A bowl full of this can be satiating and satisfies our guilty pleasures too.
