The month of May is always dedicated to mangoes. This is the season to indulge in them and restaurants across the city are making sure we do. It is not just about aam ras, mango ice cream or mango cheesecake anymore. Chefs are getting creative and going all out to include this King of all fruits in their menus with elaborate and indulgent dishes. Here is our list of Mango themed favourites across the city.
Yuuka, Sushi Rolls – The Japanese restaurant at the St Regis is celebrating this popular summer fruit with their own Tropical Sushi Rolls. It has sweet and sour slices of mango with fresh tuna, cucumber and tempura flakes. a far cry from the traditional sushi but refreshingly different and tasty.
NRI, Mango wraps – Vietnamese spring rolls or rice paper wraps are a popular dish but traditionally filled with shrimp, vegetables or even pork. NRI (Not Really Indian) is dishing up their own summer-themed version full of fruit. These wraps have sliced Alphonso mango along with cucumber, bell pepper slivers and a tangy mango dipping sauce.
British Brewing Company, Mango Pizza – If pineapple can be put on a pizza, why should mango be left out? Folks at the British Brewing Company top their traditional Margarita pizza with chunks of Alphonso mango and basil leaves and an additional chilli garlic dip. Full marks for innovation but also that it is not overly sweet and is a great choice of topping.
AKA Bistro, Mango Menu – While most restaurants have a dish or two inspired by the fruit, AKA Bistro in Kalaghoda is going all out with their mango menu. From Mango Quesadillas, Mango Quinoa Salad to Mango Bruschettas. In fact, there is even a Mango Butter Chicken on their menu but know before you have a meltdown, this is not our Indian butter chicken. It is a grilled chicken with mango butter and peri-peri sauce, and it is delicious.
Mighty Small, Mango Freak shake – This cannot be classified as a dish but it is so over indulgent it is as good as a meal. With the current freak shake addiction that seems to have gripped the youth in Mumbai, Might Small Cafe has their own mango fueled version. This tall glass of milkshake like goodness is full of caramelised Alphonso mangoes, mint syrup, mango meringues, dried ginger powder and strawberry cake. It is a sweetness overload but it is addictive and one of the popular items on their mango special menu.
