Parsi New Year Treats

One of the most popular regional cuisines is Parsi food. It is not easily found, unless you are in Mumbai or Pune and apart from a handful of Irani cafés and a restaurant or two it is not served everywhere. However, when Parsi New Year rolls out, a lot of hotels and restaurants that normally would not feature many Parsi dishes, go out of their way to prepare elaborate feasts. With plenty to choose from, this season make the most of the Parsi menus across the city.

SodaBottleOpenerWalla - This is where it gets interesting. The quirky restaurant known for their Mumbai inspired menu and Parsi favourites has an especially curated Saas Vs Bahu menu for this Parsi New Year. Well known columnist and food enthusiast Bachi Karkaria and her very own daughter in law Akshata who happens to be the R & D and bakery chef at the restaurant have curated two separate menus. Bachi's menu is more traditional with some of her family recipes while Akshata's is a more contemporary one. This Parsi food extravaganza is available till the 21st of August. 

Four Seasons Mumbai - The hotel has a beautiful Parsi menu available to celebrate Parsi New Year, specially created by their own Parsi chefs. While some restaurants have recently discovered Parsi cuisine and realised its popularity, The Four Seasons Hotel has been offering its guests a traditional Parsi feast for years now. Simple elegant food with recipes their chefs grew up with. Expect all the usual suspects from patra ni macchi, mutton pulao daar to lagan nu custard.

Umame and Cafe at The NCPA - Farokh Khambata is extremely popular for his Pan Asian restaurants such as Joss and Umame but is equally well known for his delicious Parsi Menu he rolls out every Parsi New Year. This year is no different. Sali chicken, mutton berry pulao, patra ni prawns (a welcome change from the usual fish/macchi) and plenty more make up the menu that is available at both his restaurants Umame and Cafe NCPA. They also do home deliveries in case you are in the mood to feast at home. 

Dinshaw's Xpress - Most places that offer Parsi food for some reason tend to be a situation in South Mumbai. If you stay further up north the trek can be quite painful. Thankfully, Dinshaw's Xpress in Andheri has a delicious Bawa nu Bhonu menu that celebrates the best in Parsi food. Right from red and white checkered table cloths to bright Raspberry drinks the restaurant has gone out of its way to celebrate Parsi food. There is plenty on offer for both vegetations and non vegetarians and highlights include the kababs, spicy prawn curry and berry pulao.

The Bombay Canteen - Known for doing everything slightly 'hatke' The Bombay Canteen is also celebrating Parsi New Year in a very different way. Instead of Chef Thomas and his band of merry chefs creating a menu, they have roped in four very talented individuals from the Parsi community that are involved in food and are constantly in the kitchen. Entrepreneur and home chef Katy Billimoria, Kainaaz Contractor who owns Rustom's Parsi Bhonu – a popular Parsi café in Delhi, Perzen Patel who runs Bawi Bride, a Parsi catering business and Shireen Adenwalla – a veteran food caterer in Mumbai are the awesome foursome that have designed the Parsi menu. This special menu features multiple contributions from each chef and goes beyond the usual suspects that you find on every menu and really showcases the cuisine. This menu is available from the 17th - 31st of August 2016.
