In a city like Kolkata where the weather is mostly hot and humid, dining out means going to a restaurant with proper air conditioning. But who does not like a bit of fresh air and enjoying a meal in open air? Kolkata cannot afford to have open-air restaurants (unlike Pune or Bangalore) and can never match up to the numbers. However, open-air dining on the rooftop is certainly achievable and few restaurants in the city are lucky enough to provide that kind of rooftop ambience that is sought after. So here are a few rooftop lounges and restaurant in the city that are definitely worth checking out simply for the pleasure of good food and drinks under an open sky.
Blue & Beyond is a restaurant on the 10th floor/rooftop of Hotel Lindsay in the very busy and overcrowded New Market Area. The restaurant provides a very romantic ambience, along with excellent food in Indian, European as well as Chinese cuisines. The bar is well stocked with the best spirits and the cocktails are noteworthy as well. Having a pleasant dining experience under the sky in this very busy area is worthwhile.
Park Plaza at Ballygunge has an amazing rooftop lounge called Smoke Shack. With an infinity pool as its highlight and soft music in the background, it is a perfect setting for a romantic date. It has made a name for itself for its finger-licking barbeque platter along with some cool drinks on offer, especially its signature Breez collection.

The ambience at this place is appropriate for both chilling through an evening or for celebrating with friends. A varied drinks menu, good food and hookah – this place has it all. It is a good place for youngsters to hang out. The Tex-Mex platter and the crispy fried sesame fish are worth trying to complete the dining experience.
Black Sky Bar at the rooftop of Aauris Hotel (which is centrally located near Theatre road) is a splendid lounging area for the young and the happening. Although it is currently shut down during the monsoon, the management plan to come back with a bang in September. With a magnificent view of the city, Black Sky Bar offers a very exciting lounge experience coupled with the option of hookah and some thrilling contemporary global food.
No mention of Afraa Restaurant and Lounge would make any list on lounges in the city incomplete. It may not be a complete rooftop lounge, but its open-air terrace on the seventh floor provides a panoramic view of the locality and is one of the best places to have a romantic meal in the city. The food, drinks, service and ambience – all are A+. They have a very well-stocked wine bar, as well as other spirits. Some of their cocktails are truly inspiring.
