Mumbai's 5 Best Places for Seafood

11 May, 2016 by Roxanne Bamboat

Seafood has its own acquired taste. Unlike chicken which is universally loved, especially by folks who are just turning non vegetarian, seafood in general does not have as many takers. Then again, there are so many delicious creatures from the sea to choose from that everyone has their own likes and dislikes. The one that almost everyone seems to agree upon as being the most popular and delicious ingredient from the sea is the humble little shrimp. The city has plenty of prawn filled flavourful dishes, so to pick the absolute best of the best is a real struggle. We tried our best but then decided we could just pick some of our all time favourites. By no means is this a complete list but if you are in the mood for some shrimps, start with these, they would not disappoint.

Prawn & Calamari Ajillo at Cafe Zoe -  This restaurant serves many delicious dishes but one of their best is the simple Spanish tapas of prawn and calamari ajillo. It is basically a spicy broth with the seafood served with a nice chunk of bread to help mop up all that flavourful soup like broth. It is as simple as it sounds, made with a handful of ingredients but one of the most delightful dishes you will find.

Prawn Sizzler Yoko Sizzlers - The ideal ingredient for a sizzling hot plate loaded with grilled vegetables will always be beef but most of the time it is poorly substituted with chicken or even paneer. While it might sound unheard of, the prawn sizzler at Yoko's a popular sizzler chain across the city is surprisingly delicious. They do not get stingy, and serve about 12 or so rather large sized prawns on a bed of vegetables of your choice, slathered in a sauce of your choice (opt for garlic or pepper; you cannot go wrong with it).

Rachel's Prawn in Maple Chilli at The Sassy Spoon -  One of the city's prettiest restaurants with an elaborate menu, The Sassy Spoon is a great choice for a meal out. If you are in the mood for some prawns, then without a shadow of doubt you must indulge in Rachel's prawn in maple chilli. We use the word indulge because this dish is the owner's concoction and comes served to you in a small hot skillet, full of prawns with a nice hint of sweet from the honey and a fiery kick from the chilli, swimming in gooey emmental cheese. You are served some lovely crusty brun pao to help and while it might look like a small portion, you will be struggling to finish it.

Shrimp Dumplings at The Table - Dumplings especially prawn filled ones are hard to choose from. A lot of restaurants make beautiful ones but if we really had to pick just one then we would choose the shrimp dumplings which are served in a spicy ginger broth and are delicate and perfect. The restaurant is known for its pasta or burger, but this is possibly one of their most under rated dishes.

Prawn Koliwada at Jai Hind Lunch Home - One of the tastiest ways to cook prawns is Koliwada style. This spicy fried prawn dish is best served with green chutney and while you will find them at any Indian seafood restaurant, we think the one served at Jai Hind in Lower Parel is one of the tastiest versions. The shrimps are not over fried, the batter is not too thick and the best part is – you can eat these as an appetiser or even just as a snack with drinks. They are almost like spicy prawn popcorn and taste phenomenal.
