Sweet Mumbai

If you have a sweet tooth then Mumbai is the city to be in. The best thing about Mumbai is that you have people from different communities settled here and this gets reflected in its food scene. You get to see this diversity when it comes to desserts as well.

Here are 5 places in Mumbai where you can get a taste of its range of sweets:

Panshikar, Dadar

This little shop near the Dadar station is located in a Maharashtrian-dominated area. You get an array of Maharashtrian sweets here. It is most famous for its pedas and the shreekhand peda is pretty unique. Do try out the modaks on offer during the Ganapati festival.

The American Express Bakery, Byculla, Bandra

Mumbai has a long tradition of Goan Catholic-run bakeries. The most famous of them today is the American Express Bakery which is popular for its reasonably-priced breads, decadent cookies, bread and butter puddings, tea cakes, hot cross buns and Christmas puddings.

Yazdani Bakery, Fort

The restaurant scene in Mumbai was triggered off by the setting up of Irani bakeries in the mid-1800s. Yazdani in Fort is one of the few remaining Irani bakeries in Mumbai. You can’t miss it if you follow the smell of baking bread down the streets of Fort. They offer the Parsi favourites of fruit buns, Shrewsbury biscuits and mava cakes along with the apple pies that they are very proud of.

Sweet Bengal

All sweet shops in Mumbai sell what they call ‘Bengali sweets’ but Sweet Bengal is where you get the original stuff. They have outlets across Mumbai. Must-tries here are the kheer kodom, the dorbesh, the mishti doi, the kheer chomchom and rosogollar payesh.

Le 15 Patisserie, Bandra, Phoenix Mills

Le Cordon Bleu-trained pastry chef Pooja Dhingra is often credited with having led the modern independent pastry shop movement in Mumbai. The macarons she introduced are still iconic though many have now followed her trail. Her book, The Big Book of Treats, has a picture of a red velvet cake on the cover. It is tough choosing between her dark chocolate macaron and the red velvet cupcake so the sensible thing to do would be to have both.
