The Hummus Test

Plenty folks find a Shawarma to be a filling treat or falafels a funky alternative to a sandwich. No matter how many kababs or pides the menu has, a classic go to dish will always be a big bowl of creamy satisfying hummus. This simple chickpea based preparation has come a long way from being just a blended version with olive oil and some paprika. Today menus boast of flavoured hummus, creamier hummus and has gone out of their way to make this dish shine. Here are some restaurants we think do a pretty good job with their hummus dishes.

Souk - This is possibly the only fine dine restaurant specializing in Middle Eastern fare. Most of the time they are smaller run, slightly inexpensive and deliver at home. The Taj Mahal Hotel has Souk, serving exquisite food with a stunning view of the Gateway of India and all the boats in the marina. Needless to say, the hummus here is beautiful and they have various versions, even a baked hummus with cheese and one with truffle oil. If you are looking for the best in terms of quality and do not mind spending a little, then this is the restaurant to curb all your hummus cravings.

Sufra by Moshes - This restaurant is the brainchild of chef Moshe Shek. It is a restaurant exclusively for Middle Eastern cuisine and is more of a café than a restaurant with affordable pricing and quick service. The hummus here is beautiful, especially the one with falafel, but the really interesting version is the hummus with ful which is an Egyptian dish made with broad beans (fava beans), garlic, parsley, lemon juice and olive oil. It is a lovely combination and turns out to be quite a filling dish.

Falafels - This is what is commonly referred to as the Mc Donald's of Middle Eastern food, for no other reason than the fact that they have multiple outlets all over and are far more affordable than most restaurants. The upside is that no matter how many outlets they open; their quality is not tampered with. The regular hummus is really tasty but the hummus with falafel nuggets or the basil and sun dried tomato infused hummus are the real winners.

Country of Origin - This might seem like a strange fit since COO is known for their decadent desserts and cakes. However, the outlets have a special section for dips and spreads and have three varieties of hummus. The original, paprika hummus, the roasted garlic hummus and the basil and chilli hummus. Each one is creamy and distinctly different from the other and works well as a snack or a meal. Just goes to show that sometimes you find the tastiest dishes in the most unusual places.
