The confectionary scene in Mumbai has developed by leaps and bounds in recent years.
This has been driven not by seasoned European expat chefs in 5 star hotels but by talented young women with a lot of spunk such as Kainaz Messman, Pooja Dhingra and Sanjana Patel.
The movement started with brownies and cheesecakes, macarons followed and then cupcakes and now éclairs are the next big thing.
Funnily enough there were hardly any places in Mumbai though where you could go to for a freshly soft baked cookie to have with cold milk or a hot coffee.
Your only option was to go to stores such as Moshe’s or Theobroma to pick up some great cookies but there were no cookie cafes.
Things changed when Sweetish House Mafia came into the scene where an anonymous person would send a Tata Nano across Mumbai selling freshly baked cookies. The movement of the car was announced through Twitter and people would queue up at the appointed time. This became quite the twitter range.
Then the young banker turned baker, Neha Arya Sethi, who is behind SHM came out in the open and moved her business to a store model. Sweetish House Mafia counters came up at Inox in Nariman Point and then there was a shop at Todi Mills. You finally didn’t have to chase the elusive Nano for good cookies.
They have recently opened a store beside HSBC at Bandra’s Turner Road.
This café has seating too, air-conditioning and a toilet but no Wi-Fi. The cookies are baked fresh here and you can wash them down with milk or cold coffee or even a cappuccino.
They have a range of cookies including rare to find soft baked ones.
Our recommendations are the Nutella and sea-salt cookie and the very indulgent dark chocolate truffle cookie.
The coffee is fairly decent too and the café is quite a cozy and happy place to sit in.
