A bit of whimsy and ingenuity along with oodles of good food is what makes Mamagoto so irresistible. Mamagoto, which translates to ‘playing with food’, does not promise to be authentic. But its blend of ‘fun Asian’ cuisine has clearly resonated with the urban Indian palate. Hyderabad boasts of 2 outlets of Mamagoto, one at Banjara Hills and another at Kodapur. The Banjara Hills outlet is slightly larger of the 2, but both boast of identical grub and a cheerful and upbeat vibe. It has the delightful and nourishing bowls that keep bringing me back to Mamagoto. I have a weakness for silky coconut milk gravies. It has little surprise then that my usual orders here are the comforting 'Chiang Mai Train Station Noodles' (a cousin of Khao Suey) or the aromatic 'The Laksa Tribute' (Mamagoto’s interpretation of Chinese Malay Laksa). Spice heads can opt for 'Mama’s Ramen Bowl' or 'Bangkok Bowl'. Portion sizes at Mamagoto are generous and the soupy bowls are often more than enough for a meal. When I am in the mood for something lighter, I usually settle on one of the dumplings or classics like 'Shrimp Tempura' and 'Crispy Lamb'. The bartenders at Mama also churn out some delightful cocktails to go with the small plates.
