Taj Bengal’s original coffee shop, The Esplanade was reinvented and christened – The Hub. This was in 2001. The new, walk-in (no doors, it is an extension of the lobby), round-the-clock coffee shop with its stunning interiors, white French windows overlooking the pool, and interactive kitchen became an instant hit. The Hub has been quite popular since. The menu here is multicuisine (including a fantastic selection of sandwiches) but the Italian food is worthy of a specialty outfit. This comes as no surprise, considering the fact that since its inception The Hub has had 7 Italian master chefs including Alex Binotti, who introduced the signature Wild Mushroom (porcini) Cappuccino, still on the menu.
The ambience was excellent. However the food spread was average. We expected more options as it was a Buffet Restaurant and the price they are charging is definitely not worth the food. The Buffet in JW Marriott was much better in terms of options, taste and money value.
Firstly, the hotel, Taj Bengal. So royal. Such warmth. Cal 27 is no different. Courteous staff and beautiful decor with wonderful ambience. One can enjoy having food with the lovely swimming pool in the background. Quite a sight in the evening. My booking through EazyDiner was hassle free. I reached 45 mins earlier than my slotted time, but I was offered a table right away. Infact they were expecting me. I didn't even have to provide any booking details, they just confirmed my name and that's it. Salads - Cal 27 has a great salad section. Roasted Lamb is a must try. Just loved it. Couple of Pork Salami salads. They also have Chicken Terrine with Bellpepper and there's a fish salad too (Fish & Egg). Starters - This section is slightly disappointing for meat lovers, as they only have one chicken kebab. It was just okayish as the inside of the kebabs lacked proper amount of salt, which means the chicken pieces were not appropriately marinated. We tried Chicken Pizza from the live counter. It was quite awesome. Pasta was creamy. Pizza is the must try item in this section. Main Course - I really loved the Mutton Biryani. One of the best buffet biryanis ever. Mutton pieces were slightly hard but they tasted so good, and the rice was so aromatic. They also have Beef in the form of Tenderloin but it was very hard, so couldn't finish even one piece. Didn't like the Thai Chicken Breast in curry. I also tried plain rice with Maccher Kalia which was so good. First time fish curry in buffet meals tasted so honestly prepared. Desserts - Cabinet Pudding (10/10), an absolute must try. Blown away. And also don't miss the sugar-free Seviyan Kheer (paayesh). They have 3 bengali sweets on offer, not so special those. The show-stealer in the dessert section for me was the Raspberry Tart. Too good. Excellent service as expected. The attendants are very courteous, helpful and attentive. Buffet costed INR 2065. Easy billing and payment. Overall a very satisfying and royal experience. Very happy.
After a long time I enjoyed visiting The Hub. It used to be one of my favourite restaurants a few years ago. Then in the middle it lost its charm, and I did not like the food much. But, the last time I visited, everything was superb. Delicious food. Excellent service. And a really good vibe and energy in the place. It reminded me of the old Hub from 4 years ago.
A very disappointing Sunday brunch a week ago sum up our visit to Cal 27 - the new avatar of The Hub. ... and this is exactly why we are going to stick to our time tested visits to Sonargaon and Chinoserie. The vegetarian offerings were dull/unimaginative with lady fingers ("bhindi") "kadhi" and egg plant ("baingan") on offer along with a couple of other items . Come on, really, who wants to have a fine dining experience with these dishes for a Sunday lunch. The salads were just about good and the less said about the deserts the better. Both our children were of the unanimous opinion that the chocolate pastries and chocolate base in the deserts were very dry and seemed like the ready-mix ones they make at home in the pressure cooker. Upon enquiring with the chef, we were informed that all chocolate-based pastries were egg-less. Now this of course presumes that everyone wants egg-less pastries, hmm..... While the decor has indeed changed, the insipid food menu leaves a lot to be desired. Seriously, if Cal 27 needs to attract and retain guests for its F&B, it should probably start taking a leaf out of JW Marriott's brunch offerings! Please make sure that the serving staff inform guests that rotis, naans, etc. are available to order at the table as no one bothered to inform us of the same and we had to do with just rice. Adequate serving spoons, soup ladles and cheese knives at the serving tables are certainly expected instead of having to call for the same multiple times.
The Hub used to be a good place for lunch. Post renovation, it's called Cal 27. It has a bright look, though the floor is a bit too bright. The bar looks much better, but a lift installed in the middle of the restaurant is a bit of an eyesore. The buffet has become very boring with a dull selection of items with insipid tastes
Cal 27 is an eye-catching part of Taj Bengal’s Lobby with its spectacular interiors, white French windows overlooking the azure pool. Creatively designed as an international food theatre, this popular round-the-clock coffee shop exhibits an interactive kitchen and is all time popular amongst tourists as well as locals located at Taj Bengal, 34B, Belvedere Road, Alipore, Kolkata. The all day dining restaurant has luxurious interiors are highlighted by beautiful chequered floor and comfortable plush fully upholstered sofas and chairs.
Here the buffet island is placed right in the middle where lavish spread of breakfast, brunch and dinner are served. The menu is power packed with endless dishes in North Indian, South Indian, Chinese, Continental and Italian cuisines. The attractively displayed salad platters with four varieties of well seasoned cold meats, sprouts, Piping hot soups, baskets of soft breads and massive flower arrangements allures you. An entire section of fresh vegetable juices is overwhelming .Thin crust Chicken Pizza, Tuna Ravioli, Fish Exotica, Prawn malai curry, Lamprias and pasta is amazing. The chef does a wonderful job preparing scrumptious club sandwiches and juicy burgers on the menu. Sushi and prawn cocktail with different variety of cheese and salami is worth trying with shorba. For the main course savour Lamb tikkia, yummy Mutton curry, Shrimp Nasi Goreng, and Roasted pork with vegetables, Rice with green Thai curry. Good bread options are available and you can choose from soft Butter Naan, crisp Garlic Naan and amazing Laccha Paratha.
The signature cocktails of Cal 27, red wines, white wines, City of Joy, energize and refresh your spirits .The mocktails such as Howrah Breeze, SunRise at Alipore are amazing as you take a comfortable seat overlooking the pool ,enjoy awe sum desserts at the colorful dessert counter with lip smacking Chocolate Mudpie, Waffles , warm Pancakes with drizzle of chocolate sauce, stewed apple whipped cream and maple syrup, Croissants, Peach snap rolls, Tarts and variety of ice creams, Gulab jamun, Parsi Kulfi, Classic Tiramisuetc.
Cal 27 is an excellent place where you can have a top notch dining experience with friends and family which is so typical of Taj.
