Trust the team behind Amethyst and Chamiers to create Pondicherry’s most trendy spot. Coromandel Café has been toast of the town this year and is already on every travel guide’s must-eat list. It is a must-do place alright, but more so for the gorgeous interiors and fantastic cocktails. Situated just off the promenade in Le Maison Rose, Coromandel Café feels tropically exotic and aristocratically spacious. The luxuriously appointed dining area is easily the most elegant affair in town with chandeliers dangling from 15-foot ceilings of this French mansion. Its outdoor section is green and calming, always reminding you that is a holiday town after all. The menu is pretty standard metro-city bistro fare with Instgrammable plating trying to pass off as gourmet cuisine. My 'Fillet Steak' was done medium-rare as per instruction and seasoned judiciously while a hummus-laden thin-crust 'Lebanese Lovers Pizza' passed the muster as well. A plate of 'Fried Calamari' burst with freshness under a light batter. What did steal the show were my cocktails – 'Paan Mojito' and 'The Spiced Orange' – which were blended and layered with such deftness that I am certain they were better than anything I have sipped in Chennai.
