One of Pune’s earliest trysts with Italian cuisine has been at the lovely Little Italy. The brightly lit, comfortable sit-down ambience is made more pleasant by the smiling staff and polite service. Start out with a simple bruschetta al pomodoro – sliced farmer’s bread, grilled and topped with garlic, freshly chopped tomatoes, some oregano and a drizzle of olive oil. If you are up for something slightly more complex, try the roasted aubergine with chopped garlic and mint, zucchinis marinated in white wine, or the antipasti platter (which is a traditional Sicilian selection of sun-dried tomatoes, olives, capers, artichokes, pickled onions, mushrooms, and mixed veggies in olive oil served with warm farmer’s bread). Then, after perhaps a soup or salad, it would be sacrilege to not dig into a scrumptious pizza – my pick would be the toe-toe with mushrooms, capsicum, jalapeños, tabasco and lashings of molten mozzarella. They also dish out some exquisite lasagnes, risottos, pastas, and croquettes.
