For foodies in the South, Madurai is another kind of pilgrimage town. Legends of Amma and Kumar Mess travel far and wide, but you do not have to. Madurai Kumar Mess brings many of the cities fabled dishes in a sanitised, air-conditioned format to Vadapalani, Chennai. I have spent many a banana-leaf wiping off their 'Madurai style Mutton Biryani', 'Crab Omelette', 'Nattukozhi (the gamier country chicken) Fry', 'Mutton Kola Urundai' (meatballs) and 'Kalakki', a runny omelette absolutely delicious with a 'Parotta'.
