The famed ‘Veda’ of Connaught Place has forayed in Gurgaon with an addition of a Chinese Sichuan menu which explains the new name clearly. Replete with ornate columns, the flickering light falling soft yet bright, the Chinese influence reflected in the minimal eastern umbrella motifs picked out in the ceiling, and the expansive feel of a grand Indo-China confluence impresses when one first enters. Veda’s curry leaf and lotus stem chips are tantalizing to start with. Do not miss the crispy fried spinach – served chaat style, it is stunning. The rogan lamb shank is outstanding and breaks of the bone beautifully. Djingg’s menu represents the wide spectrum that is Sichuan china, for example very good ‘black bean spare ribs and ‘fried fish with garlic and chilli’. And yes, all the dim sums are to die for! Bean curd is transformed into a culinary work of art with none of the blandness that you may associate it with, be it in the ‘mapo tofu’ or any other tofu dish in the menu. The braised homestyle fish is supremely good and underscores the Sichuan way of using spices, enough but not too much and altogether such as an exotic perfume. All the clay pot dishes are worth a try! For a typical Indian refreshing sweet ending, go for the ‘litchi rabri’, decadent to the core!
