Rudu Kathiyawad serves food from Kathiyawad, which is the local word for Saurastra region of Gujarat. The Gujarati cuisine from Saurashtra region is a little different from the rest of Gujarat and it is very popular too. The restaurant is located on the terrace of Himalaya Arcade which overlooks Vastrapur Lake so that means the terrace restaurant has a beautiful view but one has to look over the parapet to get the view. The restaurant operates only in the evening as it would probably be hot in the afternoon time in a terrace restaurant which has open sides. This is a place where they serve Kathiyawadi Thali so it’s a fixed meal which one can have in unlimited portions except maybe the white butter which is served in limited quantity. The regular things on the thali are thick Bajra roti, Bhakri, thin wheat rotis, Gujarat Pakoras, rice, kadhi, potato vegetable, papad, pickles, salad and jaggery. The variable items are two types of vegetables apart from the potato vegetable which can be any seasonal vegetable, two types of sweets, again it can be any two kinds of Indian sweets. Sometimes they serve Gujarati sweets like Sukhadi, which is made out of wheat, ghee and jaggery. Unlike, Gujarati food, vegetables in Kathiyawadi cuisine don’t have jaggery added to it. Buttermilk is another thing which is a must in a Kathiyawadi thali.
