Toran is one of the older Gujarati restaurants serving the popular thali meal, here. Toran mean a decorative strip made by women in Gujarat which is hung on the door frame of a house. It symbolizes welcome to a guest who comes through the door of the house. In keeping with its name, Toran is a welcoming place. Located on Ashram Road, opposite Sales India, this restaurant has simple décor, but, it has a lovely view of their garden from tall glass windows. It serves authentic Gujarati food which is popular not just among local customers but also amongst tourist who frequents the city. A thali meal includes 4 different types of vegetables - 'Potato Vegetable, Paneer Gravy Item, '1 Green Vegetable' and '1 Lentil' preparation. Also, there are 2 savoury items which could be 'Dhokla', 'Khandvi', 'Green Kachori' or 'Methi Pakoda' and any of the other Gujarati snacks. There will be 2 sweet dishes, most likely some Gujarati sweet like 'Basundi', 'Shrikhand', 'Mango Ras', etc. Also, there will be 'Dal' and 'Kadhi', both will be sweet in taste. During the summers, you are sure to get 'Mango Pulp' as a sweet dish. Additionally, here they serve 'Wheat Chapattis' and 'Puris' along with 'Pickle', 'Salad', 'Papad', 'Chutneys' and 'Green Chillies'. There is also 'Chhaas' or Buttermilk', which is good for digestion. This is a must in a Gujarati meal. Service is swift and continuous. The numerous servers keep on replenishing your plate as soon as you finish any one of the food items on your plate, so better say no when you want them to stop serving you food.
