Nando’s is not new to Chandigarh – having established themselves well over the last few years. The sole outlet in the city is housed in Elante Mall. With its grilled chicken meals and a pick of fiery sauces, the popular South African chain has a menu that surely appeals to the Punjabi palate in the city. Housed on the third floor of the mall, the restaurant is spacious and it is hard not to fall in love with the interiors. It is vibrant yet subtle and the artwork on the walls does well to pay an ode to the chain’s African roots. There is plenty of seating, but here is the catch. The air-conditioning is tricky in this outlet and there are tables where you could feel the heat. It took us a while to find our sweet spot. The new format of ordering first at the teller is a tad disappointing as you end up standing in a queue, all the while memorising what the rest of the family wants. Nevertheless, most diners are familiar with the menu – grilled fare is the mainstay and we have noticed how the vegetarian section is also getting plumper with time. New arrivals are introduced often here and we spotted a new selection of Naans with pizza-style toppings. We ordered the ‘Peri-Veg Naan’ which is essentially a thin-crust pizza-style base topped with chickpeas, lentil in a spicy sauce, some mozzarella and onion served with a yoghurt-based sauce. We weren’t too impressed with the overall pairing. The ‘Chicken Skewers, Pita and Fresh Salsa’ and ‘Chicken Espetada’ were generous in portion but the chicken in both dishes was overcooked. Surprisingly, the sides were good. But then, it is hard to go wrong with 'Potato Wedges'. The Peri-Peri sauces were our saviours for this meal. For diners to truly relish the Nando’s experience, the outlet better sharpens its skills and grills too. Avoid sitting near the cola refill station as it can get very noisy
