Consistently topping the charts for being the only restaurant in Chandigarh to offer a variety of Chettinad and Malabari fare, Swagath remains an all-time favourite with most foodies. It is a must-visit for those who relish fine south Indian fare but do not come here looking for dosa and idli. Instead, try their perfectly done appams, stews and more. The restaurant housed in the city’s busy dining street in Sector 26, does not boast of fancy interiors – expect a classic looking, simply styled restaurant. With their pristine white tablecloths and a single red rose in the vase, it is an old world to the T. It is always wise to make a reservation as finding a table is never easy, even on weekdays. The menu is quite plump and offers Mughlai, Chinese and South Indian fare. Given the multi-cuisine spread, it is no surprise that the place is always brimming with larger groups, families mostly. So as much as we relish their kebabs and tikkas, do try their South Indian appetizers as well. It is perhaps the only place where you can dig into 'Prawns Koliwada' along with 'Pomfret in Butter Pepper Garlic'. There is also a variety of fish with Mangalorean flavours on the menu. If you are a first-timer here then do try the 'Vegetable Stew' or 'Chettinad Pepper Chicken' teamed with either the 'Appam' or 'Neer Dosa'. But if you are a large group with varied preferences, the Chinese fare is equally well done. Of course, the Indo-Chinese influence is hard to miss but it is a people pleaser. The ‘Crispy Corn’ and ‘Shredded Chilli Chicken’ never disappoint. Given the close seating and a large number of diners, the place does get noisy. The exceptional service makes up for it.
