Fatafati The Fatty Bao Is Coming To Kolkata
Kolkata Waits For The Fatty Bao To Open Up This November
28 Oct, 2017 by Anindya Sundar BasuThe news has been going around in Kolkata food and restaurant circle for some time now. The speculation or rather a debate was about whether it will be SodaBottleOpenerWala or The Fatty Bao. Monkey Bar, the very popular and successful brand of The Olive Group of Restaurants has completed 1 year and perhaps this is the right time for another successful brand of Olive Bar and Kitchen, The Fatty Bao to be welcomed to the city. Chef Manu Chandra and Chetan Rampal are spearheading the expansions in the city with Avantika Saraogi as the local partner for this 7th The Fatty Bao in the country.
To get some insight into this exciting brand stepping into the city, the best person to get in touch with was Chef-partner Manu Chandra. When contacted, Chef was both excited and ecstatic about coming back to the city which has embraced Monkey Bar as their own in the last 1 year. The Toast to Calcutta, Old fashion on Camac, Mad Men have become the cocktails to die for on any given day. Chef says to wait for some more surprises as this 70 cover restaurant opens up, not confirming on the nomenclature though but he confirms the eclectic menu of The Fatty Bao lends itself adapting to local flavours like gondhoraj lemon leaves and souring agents etc. There will be dishes which will be an ode to Kolkata Tangra Chinese as well.
Kolkata gets its first Izakaya?
Izakaya is a Japanese Gastropub concept where one can expect lots of skewers, robatas, a bowl of noodles which can be enjoyed with the wines and cocktails. The food is definitely not only restricted to California rolls which is not even Japanese but often referred to as Japanese. Expect a share of sushis, sashimis , nigiris, gyozas with some aromatic oils but all will be easy and simple and people will definitely enjoy. The Fatty Bao will have this and more as its essentially an Asian Gastropub.
What happens to Bao then?
Fatty Bao has been a pioneer in introducing Bao to India. So glorifying the name, some of the heavy duty Baos will soon become the talk of town like Char Siu Bao, Crab Bao, Steak bao, Patty Bao and some more.
Five dishes which you must try when you enter The Fatty Bao for the first time?
Take our pick here -
1. Variety of them but do not miss out the Baos for sure
2. Pork Belly which is popularly known as PB&J
3. Green tea noodle salad with radishes - get surprised on how noodles can be had as salad and how green tea can go into a salad
4. Flat noodles with spicy lamb which brings in the Hong Kong touch with great flavours
5. Sizzling Gyozas
Just like the way Monkey Bar had been embraced in the past one year, Chef says that Kolkata is his happy space and all that he needs is a bear hug and some more Bengali love. It is not in the very distant past when the presence of reputed national brands in the city was eagerly awaited but Monkey Bar a year back and now The Fatty Bao clearly opens up the window or rather the king size doors for other brands to woo the discerning, eating out cross-generation bhadralok crowd of Kolkata.
It will be a wait for just about a month now when The Fatty Bao welcomes you in Fort Knox Camac Street.
