5 best seafood restaurants

When you think of food and Mumbai, the first thing that comes to mind is its seafood.

Some of the most famous seafood restaurants in Mumbai are Mahesh and Trishna. There is also Gajalee whose Vile Parle branch is clearly the best. These are Mangalorean-run chain restaurants.

There is a lot more on offer when it comes to seafood in Mumbai though. The following are a few places that you could go to try seafood in Mumbai when you don’t want to visit the usual suspects:

Hotel Sindhudurg, Dadar

This is a restaurant that serves Malvani food from the coastal region of Maharashtra. The must-try dishes here are clam masala, the prawn fry, and the kingfish or surmai curry.

Apoorva, Fort

This is a family-run Mangalorean restaurant best known for its prawn gassi, which goes well with soft neer dosas, and for their squid butter pepper garlic.

Jimmy Boy, Horniman Circle

This Parsi restaurant is a good place to try out patrani machhi which is the favourite dish of the fish-loving Parsis and is much sought after in Parsi weddings. The dish consists of a pomfret fish marinated in a green (coconut, coriander, chilli) chutney and then steamed in a banana leaf.

Ling’s Pavilion, Colaba

Owner Baba Ling usually goes to the markets every morning, when he is in Mumbai, to buy fish for his restaurant. The freshness of the produce comes out brilliantly in dishes such as pepper crab, salt and pepper prawns and chilli garlic pomfret.

Hotel Deluxe, Fort

This Kerala restaurant is a good place to try out the creamy coconut milk-based fish curry, prawn ghee roast and, if you are lucky, fried karimeen from the state.

As you can see, the seafood on offer in Mumbai reflects a range of cooking traditions and is well worth exploring.
