A guide to standout desserts and what makes them special

My visits to Mumbai are always incomplete without trying new and different dessert places, and as a true dessert enthusiast, I have to agree that the city knows how to do sweet indulgences right. From cafes to bakeries and even multicuisine spots with exceptional dessert menus - the city offers several places that are an absolute haven for someone like me. So if you also love indulging in sweet treats, here’s a curated list of the best dessert places in Mumbai and what to try there.

PAUL, Lower Parel, South Mumbai

Strawberry Tartlet @ PAUL, Lower Parel, South Mumbai

With outlets across the country, PAUL has built a strong reputation for its desserts. The French bakery-cafe is especially loved for its indulgent sweet offerings, including favourites like tiramisu and tres leches. However, one thing I never miss whenever I’m at PAUL is their tartlets, with the strawberry tartlet being my clear favourite - a crisp, buttery shell filled with smooth vanilla custard and topped with fresh strawberries. Alongside desserts, the menu also features several hearty savoury plates, making it one of the finest cafes in Mumbai.

They have a number of options to choose from, but one flavour that stands out for me is the Belgian chocolate one. They also offer several cheesecake and croissant variations that are worth trying. With an ambience that gives off a cosy cafe charm and a menu that will make you return for sure, it’s no surprise that this place is considered one of the best dessert places in Mumbai.

Pumpkin Mille-Feuille @ Bandra Born, Bandra West, Western Suburbs

If you’re in the mood for something different from the usual café or bakery scene, this Bandra West spot is worth checking out. I stopped by for the fusion food and returned for the desserts. One thing I always order here is the Pumpkin Mille-Feuille. The spongy Venus Jam Cake served with mixed berry sorbet is also a crowd favourite. The menu at Bandra Born is versatile and unique, and for me, it surely fits the bill as one of the best dessert places in Mumbai.

The Dessert Emporium, Vasant Vihar, Thane Region

Chocolate Pinwheel @ The Dessert Emporium, Vasant Vihar, Thane Region

I’m a certified croissant lover, and the chocolate pinwheel at The Dessert Emporium has my heart. Instead of the traditional shape, the laminated dough is rolled into a tight coil, forming a beautiful swirl that’s then dipped in good-quality chocolate. One bite of this flaky goodness, and you’ll know why it’s so good. They also serve a plethora of creative cakeshakes that you simply cannot miss. With pink-hued interiors, cosy chairs, and a menu that goes beyond the usual flavours - this Vasant Vihar gem is one of the cutest cafes in Mumbai, perfect for impromptu dessert dates.

Sugar Rue Patisserie & Bakery, Bandra East, Western Suburbs

Pistachio Flat Croissant @ Sugar Rue Patisserie & Bakery, Bandra East, Western Suburbs

My search for standout croissants in the city led me to Sugar Rue Patisserie & Bakery in Bandra East - and it’s a find worth sharing. Instead of the usual pillowy croissant, what’s served here is a flattened version - generously layered with pistachio cream and finished with a nutty crunch that’s easily a highlight from the menu. Strawberry lovers, too, are in for a treat - several dishes here let the fruit take centre stage. It’s these small but thoughtful details that earn Sugar Rue a spot among the best bakeries in Mumbai.

Other must-haves: Dark Chocolate Strawberry Tart, Strawberry And Cream Bomboloni, Strawberry-Misu, Pina Colada Slice, Belgian Truffle Balls
