There is rarely a man who will not claim that his mother is the best cook ever. There is rarely a woman who will not have some of her mother’s dishes as her specialty. When it comes to food, there is a comfort, happiness, excitement and satisfaction in mom’s cooked food. When it comes to celebrating Mother’s Day, food cannot be far behind. Various restaurants and hotels in Kolkata are planning some unique events as a part of their Mother’s Day special.
The chefs at Hyatt Regency Kolkata are expressing their love for their mother by including their mothers’ recipes in the main Sunday brunch menu at Waterside Café. While the standard fare of the Sunday brunch – cold mezzes, ready vegetarian and non-vegetarian salads, sushi, the chaat counter and wraps and grills – will be present, they will also have dishes that are the recipes of the chefs’ mothers. These dishes include bhapa bhekti, bahari begum gosht, grilled pork sausages with onion juice, chingri malai curry, pabda macher jhal, gosht biryani sabri, murgh balti sultana, etc. As a tribute, the name tags will carry the name of the chef and his/her mother, and some of the mothers will be invited on that day to experience the buffet. This is priced at Rs. 2,200 plus taxes per person.
How about cooking for your mother? Smoke House Deli Kolkata is offering ‘Cook n Serve’ to allow all the sons and daughters to make their mothers feel special. There will be three live stations of pizza, pasta and eggs and, under the friendly guidance of the executive chef, one can cook for their mom. At the pizza and pasta counters, olives, bell peppers, mushrooms, cheese are the vegetarian options, with chicken added for the non-vegetarian options. All standard varieties of omelette can also be prepared, and one can also assemble a sizzling brownie as a dessert.
Novotel Kolkata Hotel and Residencies have a live pasta counter for kids to cook pasta for their mothers, and a scrumptious buffet lunch that includes mom-favourites such as butter chicken and rajma chawal, murgir jhol and ghee bhat and malpua with rabri and chanar payesh. The mothers dine free. In Stadel, the mothers can dine free at First Innings (their multicuisine restaurant) for the brunch, and one can also pick up cakes and pastries from Baker Boy (the bakery) at a discounted rate.
The Lalit Great Eastern Kolkata is holding a special brunch at Alfresco, their all-day dining restaurant, where the moms will enjoy a free lunch for a table of four with a packed chocolate cake as a gift.
There will always be a debate on whether Mother’s Day actually needs to be celebrated on a particular date or if it is every day, but there is never any doubt that taking your mom out and celebrating a love for food is priceless.
