Kathi Rolls were originated in Kolkata in the early 1930s in Nizam’s restaurants, where it was essentially meat cooked on skewers wrapped in a parantha with onions, some veggies, chutneys and sauces. There are many stories about its origins. It is said that it was developed for the English men and memsahibs who did not want to dirty their hands with the kebabs, so they got it wrapped in a parantha and rolled in a newspaper on one end. Others say Kathi Roll was developed to cut down on the spices and make it milder for the English men and women.
But, whatever might be the real story, the fact is that Kathi Rolls were first served in Nizam’s restaurants and it was the only place one could get it for a long time before the popular roll started appearing at many places in Kolkata. Now, it is available in most of the cities and also in the US. One can get mutton, chicken, egg, paneer and vegetable rolls which are wrapped either in a Lachha Parantha or a Roomali Roti at many restaurants in Ahmedabad.
