One of the first places in the city to bring Japanese specialties into local gourmand parlance, this restaurant has a soothing ambience, with dim lighting and bursts of red flair. Arm yourself with a pair of chopsticks and dive into the hotategai (scallops), ebiko (prawn roe) or kani (crab sticks) sushi, or the calamari jyo sashimi and the octopus or hamachi (yellowtail) tokujou sashimi. The hand-rolled asparagus temaki, unagi (eel) or tamago (egg omelette) nigiri sushi, ikura (salmon roe) gunkan sushi, avocado maki and special Volcano Roll (with chopped salmon, spicy powder, spring onion and tempura flakes) are all mouth-watering. Do not miss the katsudon (pork donburi sushi), yakimono of kamunegi (duck breast in teriyaki sauce), yasai (assorted veg) tempura, or the incredible teppanyaki – including lobster, beef striploin with yakiniku sauce, duck breast with pineapple chunks, chicken with mushroom, leeks and garlic soya, or pork loin with cabbage and shiogayaki sauce. There are some gorgeous sides to choose from, including a sweetish agedashi tofu, and udon noodles with tempura prawn soup. Desserts provide equally exciting options, with ice cream tempura, banana tempura, sago with syrup and pineapple crêpes.
