No talk of Pune’s culinary heritage is complete without a mention of the iconic Irani café Vohuman. Helmed by an eccentric elderly Parsi gentleman fondly addressed as ‘Bawa’ by regular patrons, Vohuman recently shifted from its decades-old, scruffy location to a swanky, new, two-level place on the opposite side of the street. The heart-stopping sumptuousness of its classic dishes, however, still remains unchanged – think double egg omelettes oozing with melted cheese which also appears in the form of a thick slab nestled between their buttered toasts. Also try the unique ‘cream plate’ which is basically a big dollop of fresh cream topped with sugar, to be mopped up with fresh ‘brun’ pao, washed down with – no prizes for guessing – a cutting glass of their stimulating Irani chai which is sure to infuse vim and vigour into an otherwise laidback Sunday morning.
