This authentic Assamese restaurant is located in Koramangala, South Bengaluru. The décor is simple glass-topped tables and sturdy chairs with some traditional decor on the wall, and the latest Assamese chart-toppers on speakers form the atmosphere here. You must settle for the basic, 'Unlimited Veg Thali' (chicken, mutton, fish, pork and duck versions are available too) comprising rice, dal, stir-fried vegetable of the day, ‘Aloo Pithika’ (Assamese style mashed potato spiked with mustard oil and chillies), ‘Boror Tenga’ (dal fritters dunked in a light, tangy gravy), ‘Bengana Fry’ (fried aubergines) and papad, and then add on non-vegetarian mains such as ‘Murighanta’ (fish head cooked in dal), ‘Patot Diya Gahori’ (pork cooked with lettuce} or the 'Duck Curry'. 'Axomi’s Khorikat Pura Gahori' is chunks of juicy pork stuffed into a hollow bamboo skewer and grilled till done. The result is gorgeous smoky flavours in the meat. Do not forget to ask the staff if they have fresh stock of 'Bhut Jolokia Chillies', which you can buy off them.
Axomi is not the best representation of Assamese food. At the best it is a fusion cuisine as they try to cater to a diverse palate of cosmopolitan Bangalore. While you might get a good idea of assamese ingredients like bamboo shoot the final outcome is a bit disappointing to an ethnic Assamese. Nonetheless the service is eager and responsive. Food overall is good and the portion size is fab. I would recommend the Murighonto.
For me this is a home away from home, as far as food is concerned. Even the Ambience though not great has a touch of Assam (use of bamboo, gamosa et al). They serve typical Assamese (axomiya) thalis as well that comes very close to what one would eat at an Axomiya's home in villages of Assam.
The food is tasty, the ambience is alright. The service is good. Ordered the non-veg, chicken thali, was really tasty. Will definitely go back for more.
Being an assamese I was looking for options in Bangalore. Axomi came highly recommended. While the restaurant can give a decent introduction to assamese cuisine to the non initiate for an assamese the food can be better. Also the spartan settings and a tad slow service does take away from the experience. Food is good but can be better and I would recommend the fish options any day over other meats. Ok place to try something new.
I have not visited it yet but ordered twice at home. The fish curries taste yum! there's a lot of variety. Thinking to try more.
