Hunan has a massive line-up on its menu covering Chinese and Thai dishes and has over time ensured that they nail pretty much all of the dishes. I love the fact that it is a child-friendly restaurant, where special care is taken of kids at the table. Try the 'Chicken Velvet Soup' with lots of colourful vegetables and water chestnuts for that added crunch. The 'Minced Pork and 'Mushroom Soup' is a good one too. Head on directly to the Dimsum and try the 'Pork Flower Dumplings' as well as the 'Sesame Chicken Pot Stickers'. It is 6 to a portion so plan well. The 'Char Siu Bao' is really well done, with a good choice. Some other good options are the 'Chicken Lettuce Cup', with spring onions and water chestnuts. The 'Shredded Pork Beijing style' is good too. For the vegetarians, the 'Chinese Scallion Pancakes' are my pick, as well the 'Edamame Wontons', the 'Salt and Pepper Silken Tofu' and the 'Soft Corn Curd Chilli Pepper'. Among the main courses, the 'Lo Han Hai, Tofu and Chinese Cabbae with Vermicelli Noodles' is good, as is the 'Hunan Trio Zi Ji' which is a spicy gravy. This is surf and turf of sorts and works really well. The 'Prawns in XO Sauce' are also great. There is a massive choice when it comes to the rice and noodles segment. Vegans have the 'Vegan Ham Fried Rice' to look forward to. The 'Seven Jewel Rice' is also quite indulgent. There is a meal in bowl options that you can look at if perusing a menu is tedious. The 'Burmese Khowsuey', the 'Thai Curries' and much more. You will need multiple visits to get through the Thai menu that is also extensive.
Pan Asian cuisine is turning a new leaf by becoming more approachable to the diners. It has created a huge fan base for itself since it has become more widely known to the entire world for its aromatic depth and natural refreshing ingredients. The Pan Asian world has moved beyond Chinese fare and has stretched to include other fascinating cultures as well. The best example of this is one of Bengaluru’s most popular restaurant, ‘Hunan’. This charming Asian restaurant is a great place for friends to catch up over lip-smacking food and cheerful joyous ambience. The restaurant is part of New BEL Road circuit and is surrounded by a pack of trendy upmarket eateries similar to itself. The food is superb here so go at your leisure and take your time with it.
Hunan takes you on a rollercoaster ride of flavours across Asia through it’s vast, varied menu. Dishes are authentically prepared and hits all the right spots. Each course comes with multiple options for you to create your meal from. An abundance of seafood finds it’s way into the menu, a benefit for seafood lovers. Hunan does not serve alcohol. Compose your first course of, sesame cucumber salad, pork flower dumplings, chicken bao, edamame wontons, chili prawns with tamarind sauce, mu shu duck roll, crackling spinach with corn, duo of pork belly, lobster in spicy XO sauce and crunchy kung pao baby corn. Eat something more substantial for second course like, chicken in a Thai phrik sauce, tangy chili fish, stir-fried vegetables with cashews, braised hakka duck, red curried tofu with carrots, Burmese khow suey and shredded lamb in Hunan sauce.
If you get a chance to sample Hunan’s buffet, do not miss it. The restaurant expects you to dress smartly so swap your flip-flops for proper shoes. Prices are a little on the higher side. Hunan is a wonderful spot to take your family or your date to for a nice dinner. Unlike other Asian restaurants drowning in the sea of red Chinese lanterns and golden dragons, Hunan keeps it’s décor snowy and sleek. The entire restaurant is washed in shade of white, including the furniture. Dining style is semi-formal. Huge light installations in shape of Chinese letters covers the focal wall. Décor is modern, smart and attractive. They get busy often, reserve a table ahead.
