There is something charming about restaurants that have an ethnic-themed decor. The newly opened Baithak housed in Chandigarh Haveli lives up to its name with a rustic setting – there is everything from jharokhas to mirror embellished walls, wooden tables and thalis and even a machaan outdoors. There is plenty of room here for large groups. While it might come across as a restaurant that would have traditional Indian fare, here is where the surprise lies. The menu at Baithak focuses on modern Indian with some fusion fare as well. We liked the selection of starters that borrows from regional fare as well as some foreign flavours. Leading the way is the "Pack of Cutting Chakna" that brings in 'Sprouts', 'Jaipuri Bhindi Fries', 'Tandoori Makhanas', 'Apple Chaat', 'Peanut Masala' and 'Peri-Peri Banana Chips'. It is definitely worth ordering. The restaurant also does a ‘Pappadam Tray’ of assorted papads. The appetisers are equally interesting with the likes of ‘Palak Patta Mille Feuille’, ‘Red Harissa Tandoori Mushrooms’, ‘Keema Pao Gratin’ and ‘Smoked Tamarind Prawns’. While the appetisers are quite filling, the main course offers a good selection too. Choose from the likes of ‘Prunes infused Dal Makhani’, ‘Murgh Kohlapuri’ and ‘Rampuri Lamb Chops’. The presentation is very good and the service is efficient. Do make the most of the terrace on balmy evenings.
