It is hard to find any top ten dining lists in the city that does not include Pashtun. One of the city’s oldest ‘ethnic-Indian’ restaurants, Pashtun has earned itself credit for not only being consistent in quality but not giving into gimmicks. It’s retained its look – the fake tree housed in the middle of the restaurant – has been there since the beginning. In fact, the decor reminds you of an old time restaurant. Copper mashaals lights, copper tumblers, wooden seating and nomadic scenes painted on the wall dot the decor here. We would not blame you if you are not charmed by it. The true delight lies in the food. Inspired by North West Frontier Province cuisine, the menu boasts of a range of kebabs from the tandoor. ‘Murg Tikka Afghani’, ‘Murg Lahsuni Kebab’, ‘Bhutta Seekh Kebab’ and ‘Lamb Pather Kebab’ are some of the specialities. The latter is cooked in stone platter too and is quite the signature dish here. Unlike other Indian restaurants in the city, the menu in Pashtun is precise. The dals are much recommended including the ‘Dal Bukhara’, an ode to the original. Vegetarians will relish the chef’s take on ‘Khumb Matar’ as well as ‘Tawa Vegetable’, which brings in assorted vegetables cooked on the tawa. The portion size could be better but given the pricing and quality, it can be disregarded. There is also a popular pub here tucked away in the basement called ‘Wild Wild West’. The snacks served here are lip-smacking. If you are looking for a place to treat visiting relatives, especially the NRI kinds, Pashtun makes for a good choice.
