There are not many standalone single-cuisine restaurants in Chandigarh barring a few Italian and Chinese restaurants. While Sultan, a fairly new arrival on the city’s culinary map, is not strictly single cuisine, the menu is dominated by Middle Eastern flavours and dishes. Housed in Sector 7, Sultan is a fine-dining restaurant that plays to its strengths. The interiors though do not really reflect the cuisine. It is a plush restaurant with its mood lighting, marble-topped long island bar, ornate screens, mirrors et al. There is ample room for large groups too. Reserving a table though is advisable. The menu is largely divided into 2– north Indian and Middle Eastern fare. There is a very good selection of soups, shorbas, starters, platters, curries, breads and even a desi take on pizzas, but more on that later. The Middle Eastern menu is well represented with the likes of ‘Kibbeh’, ‘Falafel’, ‘Moutabal’, ‘Shawarma’, ‘Shish Touk’, ‘Jujeh Kebab’...you get the drift. The Mezze platters are a good place to start this epicurean journey. Both the non-vegetarian and vegetarian platters do justice to the cuisine. The ‘Laberiyan’ – a speciality dish from Baluchistan - is quite a novelty here. For those looking to try a new version of pizza, the "Sultan style Pizzas" bring a variety of toppings and flavours. A popular one is the 'Sumac flavoured Mushroom, Onion, Olive and Chickpeas Pizza'. A 'Rajasthani Laal Maas’ topping Pizza' is indeed the first of its kind that we have spotted in a pizza menu. We also tried the ‘Khatte Baingan’ with ‘Wargi Parantha’ and relished both. The service was efficient and it was a delight to get a server who actually knew the dishes inside out.

This city is truly spectacular as far as gastronomy is concerned and is a mecca for any hardcore epicurean. Cuisines from across the world finds home on Chandigarh’s culinary map, even Middle Eastern cuisine. ‘Sultan’ is a name that often pops up when you search for a nice kibbeh in town. Although fairly new, Sultan has gained a decent fan following with its menu and it’s welcoming attitude. It’s a favourite place to dine for many families and is almost always perpetually packed. Sultan can be found at Madhya Marg, Sector 7 C in Chandigarh. Go ahead, tag that location!
