Conceptualised by Anjan Chatterjee’s son Avik Chatterjee as Speciality Restaurant’s foray into the youthful gastropub space, Hoppipola translates as ‘hopping into puddles’ in Icelandic. It does more or less live up to the quirky adolescent moniker. Bleached walls with pastel chairs have a distinctly tavern vibe, and then the games begin. Tabletop chalkboards, board games and jenga along with speakers blaring whatever Gen-Z is hooked to at the moment. Hoppipola is significantly more fun if you are below 25. There is a 58% tax on imported liquor. Can get especially noisy during the weekend afternoons, when the average age profile hovers around 20. They let you bring your pets on Monday. Check ahead though.
Each bar has its own distinct vibe that is not for everybody. An aged suit will look highly out of place at a trendy youthful bar or vice versa for the tattered jeans. Everybody has their own kind of drinking place, some like it loud and eye-catching while some like things classy and subtle. You can judge the age groups of both kinds for yourself. Youths like their watering hole to be lively, cheerful and noisy, with a décor done in technicolour. A popular name that comes to mind bearing the similar style is our very own ‘Hoppipola’. The name Hoppipola means ‘hopping into puddles’ in Icelandic, a fun and apt description when defining Hoppipola Bar. This quirky lively pub is a mecca of fun with the young party hoppers who find the perky buzz of the place simply wonderful.
Hoppipola finds a place in the buzzing trendy lanes of Nungambakkam. It’s conveniently located at The Spring Hotel on Kodambakkam High Road. This is the place to be if you want to spend the evening in a casual yet vibrant sort of ambience, filled with music, tinkling of cocktail glasses, noisy conversations and just general rambunctious atmosphere. Hoppipola is a youth-oriented place so the young clientele doesn’t mind reclining for hours on those colourful lightweight chairs. Simple bleached walls in rough state are contrasted by royal blue coloured chairs and a matching floor. Décor is not very polished or refined but who cares? That’s the charm of Hoppipola. They bring the madness in by mounting the walls with vintage stereos and broken records. Shelves of books, CDs and games are stacked on various corners, to encourage you to lie about with your friends for hours.
