  • The founders hail from Kottayam, and Kumarakom’s best dishes also some from South Kerala. My Kappa (boiled tapioca) was spiced just right to go with the slightly tart Meen Curry, and I would eat Appam + Stew ad infinitum if I could
  • If you can handle a bit of spice, then the iconic Karimeen Pollichathu gets one of its finest renditions in Chennai - slightly crispy skin and cooked right through. I also enjoy Kumarakom’s Syrian Christian staple of Beef Ularthiyathu with flaky Parottas
  • Dishes from North Kerala like the Malabar Biryani are way off point, and lamentably, Kumarakom doesn’t serve Kerala Rice during lunch meals

It is usually a promising sign to find a large number of diners from the same part of the world whose food is supposed to be on your plate. Kumarakom does not need the frills of replica-houseboats to draw hordes of Malayalis to its tables. Sojan and Mercy have been running this chain (across Chennai, Bangalore and Dubai) since 2001 and they dependably get the flavours right.
