Best Waffles in the City

Waffles are considered a great breakfast option and, for years, people have enjoyed traditional waffles with honey or maple syrup. While the classic combination is still a hit with diners, restaurants have become more creative with their waffles. For starters, it is no longer just on the breakfast menu and they come in all shapes and sizes, sweet and savoury but – most importantly – they are all delicious. It is hard to pick the best, but we came up with a few of our favourites and if you ever feel like a waffle, start with this list!

Wafflist – This tiny space in Fort has become extremely popular with the many stockbrokers that work in the area. They have another outlet in Bandra that does well too. The waffles served here are smaller in size but come loaded with treats. The chocolate flavoured ones are the preferred choice, but you get them with fruit and fresh cream as well. The interesting waffle on the menu here is their potato waffles that are much thinner, crispier and more wafer-like. They are served with a dip of your choice and make for a great snack.

Jamjar Diner – Savoury waffles are highly underrated. The emphasis is always on the sweet ones, but a good savoury waffle is a rare find and must be treasured. Jamjar Diner in Andheri has an interesting waffle on their menu called the Spicy Jalapeno and Melted Queso, which is (of course) fiery jalapeños with melted cheese and your choice of pico de gallo or picante salsa. The Mexican-inspired waffle is one of their popular dishes on the menu but is only available till 4 pm.

Indigo Deli – Mumbai loves Indigo Deli and there is little they serve that this city does not like. Breakfast time is surprisingly busy for this restaurant in all their outlets and it is because of their egg preparations, but it is also their waffles that have a fan following of their own. Apart from their regular waffles, the outlets in Lower Parel and Ghatkopar serve an amazing dish called Drunken Waffles, which is the hot waffle smeared with rum and raisin and chocolate ice cream, granola, jelly, fresh cream and a rum crème anglaise.

The Pantry – This adorable café in Kala Ghoda is a favourite among many. People come here because it is charming, but most come here to enjoy their food. The menu is evolving and they always try to incorporate new things, but a few dishes are so universally loved that they would not dare take them off the menu. The croque madame is one of them. This French delight is made here with waffles, béchamel sauce, local ham and an egg sunny side up, served with mustard and bacon jam. It is one of their more frequently ordered dishes and a very different way to enjoy a waffle.

Ellipsis – This is one of the first restaurants that made a non-vegetarian waffle a hit in the city. Their chicken waffles have a huge fan following and, while it might sound slightly odd, it is an unusual combination that works brilliantly. The waffles are served with boneless fried chicken and a sriracha maple syrup – it is a meal in itself.
