Crisp and fluffy, yeast-raised waffles are no longer relished only at breakfast, as part of a hotel buffet. Several standalone restaurants and cafés are now serving this delicacy, all day and given the varied accompaniments, there are several takers. Apart from the usual warm sweet ones, with a dizzy amount of toppings, unconventional savoury waffles abound too and prove to be a light, but satisfying, anytime snack. Mumbai now offers some unique gourmet options as well.
Grandmama’s Café, Juhu
Classics never fail to impress you and the waffles here served with honey or maple syrup, whipped cream, fruit compote and ice cream are pure delight. Of course, if you want to indulge a wee bit more, there are options galore – Nutella, milk chocolate, salted caramel, ice cream and seasonal fruits, as add-ons. Value-for-money, these satiate your dessert yearnings and are almost a meal in themselves.
The Pantry, Colaba
Waffle croque madame with local ham, bechamel and sunny side up sandwich served with homemade bacon jam, maybe their take on the classic French breakfast dish, but is an all-day popular item. For those not fixated with sweet waffles only, this robust waffle, which is almost a sandwich in disguise, is a palate-pleaser alright. You will not regret skipping the sweet ones.
Tea Villa Café, Bandra
Waffles such as peanut butter, chocolate loaded, berry blast, strawberry, nutty buddy, are on offer in this vibrant café. What is more if you want to customise your waffles, you may do so. Make your own waffle along with maple syrup and sugar and choose from a wide array of toppings available, as you sip your favourite tea.
Coffee by Di Bella, Versova
When something sweet is what you are craving for, nothing beats chocolate. The rocky road waffle here is a freshly baked Belgian waffle, with a dollop of premium chocolate ice cream, whipped cream, marshmallows, walnuts, almonds and chocolate. Sinful and decadent, this one is a must-try. Chocolate explosion, another waffle option here, is equally irresistible. Wash it down with a cappuccino if you like.
This quaint café offers a variety of comfort food, but if it is a waffle-fix you are giving in to, then the waffles here served with maple syrup, candied nuts and fresh fruits deserve to be tried. With the generous helping of fruits as topping and the pure maple syrup, you are sure to be longing for more after the first bite.
There is nothing such as a well-made light and airy waffle drizzled with chocolate or even savoury bacon and cheese toppings. Sweet and savoury versions, for every palate are fast catching on in Mumbai.
