Where taste is everything, and calories don’t count

By PRIYADARSHINI NANDY

When it’s time for a dessert fix, our stomachs and our hearts can be fairly demanding; the perfect slice of cake, pastry, éclair, or whatever tempts our taste-buds is what we crave. Hunting for the perfect sweet factor is tiresome, because on certain days a slice of packaged fruit cake, or even something from the local Iyengar bakery (with due respect to the bakery) simply won’t do. And it’s interesting to note how Bengaluru, what with its international food stops and gourmet cafes, hasn’t got a top class patisserie around every corner.

But then there’s Lavonne, tucked away in a lane in Domlur, that dishes out some of the most decadent treats. It’s a pastry studio too, so you won’t always get the same thing but it’s a good place to try if you’re into chocolate. And try one of their Blueberry Danishes too, while you’re at it.

For a good chocolate éclair, it’s hard to think beyond Café Noir at UB City. They’ve really got the éclair right. The pastry is strong enough to hold the custard cream well and yet isn’t too chewy. That, with a steaming cup of hot chocolate is pretty much what the city weather calls for.

Walk over to Sugar & Spice at Vivanta by Taj on MG Road, and head straight for their brownies. No one talks much about it, but that little café that hides behind the book store on the lobby level sure does make some good brownies.

For Whitefielders, Café of Joy could be a good place to pile on the calories. And if their Viennese Sacher Torte is anything to go by, you won’t be disappointed by their other sweet treats. The one thing about this place is this: their pastries have a little bit of that homemade touch to it, so if you’re looking for too much flourish, you might want to skip this little place.

The much-hyped Red Velvet Cupcake, which simply refuses to go out of fashion, is available at plenty of pastry shops, but the right one is often hard to come by. Glen’s Bakery in Indiranagar makes mini ones that are as cute as a button. The gooey cupcake with the cream cheese frosting is small enough to not add to the guilt for sure, and tastes rather good. The cake is not dry at all, something that most pastry shops forget to look into. Cupcake Noggins at Sarjapur Road also makes good Red Velvet Cupcakes, if you’re in that part of town.

A large chunk of our vote goes to the Bengaluru Baking Company at the JW Marriott on Lavelle Road. Apart from the Red Velvet, which has its own fan following, their éclairs and fresh fruit pastries will keep your sweet tooth happy for a long time.
