The ever-growing popularity of Dim Sum

Chinese food has always been popular in the city. Back in the day if you wanted to go out for a celebratory meal, you and your family would most likely end up at one of the many Indo-Chinese restaurants spread across town. Today we have newer trendier cuisines but Chinese food will never go out of style. These days the beloved Schezwan fried rice and Hakka noodles have been replaced by the ever so popular dim sum. At one time, no one ever went out for Chinese and ordered dim sum as a starter instead of the favourite corn curd and kung pao potatoes/ chicken or golden fried prawns. Today there are restaurants with dedicated dim sum menus to attract diners with the promise of unlimited goodies. Some of the restaurants have really got it right with their dim sum offering and these are a few I think are worth dining at.

Hakkasan/ Yauatcha - While Hakkasan is the fancy older sibling with an extensive food menu, Yauatcha is a tea house that specializes in dimsum. Both restaurants serve top notch quality and more than that have an array of choice from scallop based dim sum to their ridiculously popular edamame and truffle dim sum.

Royal China - This restaurant boldly went where no other Chinese restaurant dared to go. It launched an all-you-can-eat dim sum menu for its loyal customers and it became so popular that they unknowingly trigged off a trend of these unlimited menus. All the dim sum on their extensive menu are excellent but there is a special place in my heart for their delicious Xao Lin Bao or as I like to call them, soupy dim sum. They are stuffed with chicken and soup and are unlike any other dim sum you've ever had.

Shiro - Known for their exotic Asian menu, this restaurant cum nightclub has a great choice of dim sum. Every Saturday for lunch they have a special and I might as well add well priced, all-you-can-eat dim sum and sushi menu. While many purists will find it sacrilege to mix two cuisines, the point is, it is great food and worth trying.

Mekong - The exquisite Asian restaurant at the Palladium hotel boasts of a gorgeous view from the 37th floor but more than anything else it is their dim sum options that I find is the main reason I would revisit this restaurant.

Mainland China - Another early player in this dim sum popularity contest is the increasingly popular Mainland China restaurants. It was also one of the first restaurant to popularize this concept of all-you-can-eat dim sum menus and was able to bring it to a much larger audience. While most of the other restaurants mentioned are stand-alone or have a second or third outlet, Mainland China is a chain with multiple outlets in the city and still enjoys a loyal customer base that relish their dim sum.
