Folks familiar with the bright, neon green shipping container that doubles up as a kitchen in the small but funky restaurant in Ballard Estate will rejoice. Kaboom with its innovative menu system, laid-back appeal and overall fun space has opened its second outlet smack in the middle of bustling busy Kamala Mills. We are always talking about how we need a change with new menus and interesting food. However, despite several new restaurants popping up almost every week, most fail to impress. Kaboom, however, is not one of them. The restaurant is actually more of a café and, unlike most restaurants with a set menu and cuisine, it works quite differently.
It could be said that the place almost resembles a food truck but, instead of being on wheels, it has doors and walls. The menu is different each day of the week, offering a variety of choice and this concept seems to work well for them. For example, Monday is all about South East Asian food, Tuesday is Italian, Wednesday is fast food, Thursday is Thai and so on. They are so dedicated to bringing variety to their menu that, despite eating a specific type of pasta on Tuesday, there is no guarantee that the same dish will be on the menu the following Tuesday. They like to mix it up and we are not complaining!
It is hard to pick dishes to recommend with a menu constantly rotating, but some dishes are staples and seem to be available through the week. One of them is their báhn mì Vietnamese-style sandwich that comes highly recommended by their Chef Darius Madon. It is served in a crusty baguette and oozing with meat, veggies and their special sauce. The stir-fry chicken in lemon butter sauce served with rice and bok choy is a filling meal with subtle flavours, making it a great choice for a quick lunch before you head back to work.
The farmer’s grain salad is a funky choice with no greens or leaves in it. It is full of grains, millet, sunflower seeds, carrots and beetroot. The really interesting part is that this salad is available all week long and its dressing changes every day to keep with the theme of the day. So you can eat the same salad five days a week, but it will taste different each time! For people in love with French fries, there is much to be happy about. They serve various versions of fries throughout the week; the classic and the parm fries (parmesan cheese sprinkled) are our top picks.
Kaboom focuses on quality and quantity, so all ingredients are locally sourced and organic as far as possible. There is a great emphasis on being eco-friendly. Thus, you will notice there are no plates here but recyclable cups and cutlery, which also makes it easier to eat on the go if you are short on time or need to run back to the office. Kaboom is quirky and casual and serves hearty food. They are opened seven days a week from 9.30 am till midnight.
